The Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of American independence, is set to be celebrated once more as part of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. America250PA, known formally as the Pennsylvania Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, is organizing this celebration through its Bells Across PA initiative. This program involves artists creating designs on fiberglass bell sculptures sponsored by businesses or individuals. The goal is to place a bell in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
Local efforts have been made to include the 55th Legislative District in this celebration. A bell will be placed at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg and another in Murrysville along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. Sponsored by First Energy, the Murrysville bell will commemorate the Haymaker Well site, recognized as the first commercial gas well globally. The artwork titled “MORE Energy in Westmoreland” aims to honor Westmoreland County’s history in energy production.
America250PA is currently seeking proposals from artists residing or working in Westmoreland County for this project. Selected artists will receive a $1,250 honorarium upon completion. Applications are open until June 16 and can be submitted via email to Dawn Lamuth at dlamuth@golaurelhighlands.com.
In related news, a telephone town hall event is scheduled for June 9 at 4 p.m., featuring Murrysville resident Mary Bach discussing consumer protection against scams.
The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts has issued a warning about a scam involving fake traffic ticket texts demanding payment via fraudulent URLs. They advise reporting such texts to authorities.
Additionally, applications are open for the Pennsylvania House Legislative Fellowship Program for fall 2025. The program offers work opportunities at Pennsylvania’s Capitol Building with compensation and potential college credit. Eligible applicants must apply by July 1 through pahousefellowship.us.
