Rep. Jill Cooper from Westmoreland has been appointed to the House Local Government Committee, as announced today. The committee is responsible for reviewing bills that propose changes to municipal codes governing local government operations. This includes legislation on local government purchases, real estate assessment policies, and statewide pensions for municipal police officers.
Cooper emphasized the significance of municipal governments in Pennsylvania: “Our municipal governments have some of the most direct impacts on the people of Pennsylvania,” she stated. “The work they do is incredibly important in the day-to-day lives of their residents. I’m excited to get to work to make sure the state level can continue providing the support our local governments need and deserve.”
Pennsylvania comprises over 2,500 local government units of various sizes. The committee collaborates closely with the Local Government Commission, a bipartisan legislative service agency offering research assistance on issues related to local governments.
