House Republican policymakers in Pennsylvania announced on Mar. 25 a new initiative called “Freedom Through Affordability,” which aims to deliver tax relief and lower costs for families across the state.
The plan comes as many Pennsylvanians are facing increased prices for everyday essentials, with lawmakers seeking to make the state more affordable for residents. The package includes six-month tax cuts and sales tax holidays designed to provide immediate financial relief.
Representative David Rowe, chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, said, “Our goal is simple: Make Pennsylvania a place where families can afford to live, work and build their future. When people can keep more of what they earn and the cost of everyday life is within reach, they have the freedom to make their own choices about their future. That’s what this effort is about – achieving freedom through affordability for people across the Commonwealth.”
The legislative proposals include reducing the state Personal Income Tax rate from 3.07% to 2.99% for six months, suspending Gross Receipts Tax on electricity and telecommunications, and introducing sales tax holidays on car seats and baby products. Representative Kristin Marcell said, “Everywhere I go in my community, people are looking for a break from rising costs, especially on the basics of life… This temporary tax holiday is a commonsense way to give them that break.” Representative Eric Davanzo added that energy costs impact all sectors: “Because energy costs factor into production, wholesale and retail costs on everyday products, this relief will be felt across the Commonwealth’s entire economy.”
Representative Abby Major introduced legislation targeting high fuel prices by proposing a suspension of the state’s gas tax for six months. She said her bill would help families balance budgets amid inflation.
Additionally, Representative Joe Hogan announced an “Affordability Starts Here” tour beginning next week in Hanover to gather input from residents about making life more affordable throughout Pennsylvania.
