Scottdale Medicaid spending on dental services jumps 17336.8% in 2024

In 2024, providers in Scottdale billed Medicaid $149,433 for dental services, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This represented a 17336.8% rise compared to 2023, when claims in the same category totaled $857.

Medicaid is a state-administered health insurance initiative supported jointly by federal and state entities. It insures low-income people, older adults, children and those with disabilities, making up a major part of the U.S. health care system.

Since taxpayer funds support Medicaid disbursements, shifts in local billing provide insight into how public health funds are spent in various communities.

The Dental Services category covers medical billing attributed to a particular range of dental care, outlined by standardized HCPCS and CPT codes. For this report, service codes were assigned strictly to one category using standard prefixes and numerical parameters. This ensures closely related services are analyzed together without double counting and maintains precise rankings year over year.

Scottdale saw increased Medicaid spending in more than one service group, but dental services posted the highest total payment for 2024 among them.

Throughout Pennsylvania, dental services held the 14th spot in total Medicaid payouts for 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, Scottdale’s Medicaid dental payments climbed $132,999, up 809.3%. Notably, periods of accelerated spending were seen, particularly evident in 2021 and 2020.

Although dental Medicaid expenditures in Scottdale appeared citywide, the majority came from just a few ZIP codes. Notably, in 2024, ZIP code 15683 accounted for $149,432 in these payments, and the top ZIP code made up all Medicaid dental claims in the city for the year.

Within this category, a small share of billing codes were associated with most Medicaid payments.

Comparisons reveal that Medicaid dental service payments in Scottdale increased 17336.8% from 2023 to 2024, versus a 1693.1% growth across all Medicaid claim categories in the area over the same timeframe.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Medicaid spending by federal and state governments was about $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023. That amounted to roughly 18% of total national health-related expenditures, up significantly from $613.5 billion in 2019, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This reflects an increase of approximately 40% in just a few years, with main causes being broadening program enrollment and greater use during and after the pandemic time frame.

Major federal budget policy under the Trump administration included several provisions aimed at scaling back Medicaid outlays and altering its structure. For example, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed into law in 2025, is projected to reduce federal Medicaid support by more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years and brings forward measures such as work requirements and higher cost-sharing, which could lower both coverage and available funding for certain groups. This is expected to gradually shift additional costs onto the states and moderate the pace of federal Medicaid spending growth, even as the program continues to serve millions of Americans.
