GREENSBURG-SALEM HIGH SCHOOL: Fall Sports Update

Update

Greensburg-Salem High School issued the following announcement.

Dear Parents and Students,

Over the last 24 hours, there has been much discussion about Governor Wolf’s strong recommendation that fall and winter sports be delayed until January 1, 2021. As of this writing, that statement is a strong recommendation, but is not an order or a mandate. I understand the Governor’s position. Nonetheless, as the statement is not an order or a mandate, I do not see the need to postpone our athletic programs.

Following the guidelines set forth by the PIAA and the WPIAL, as well as the efforts undertaken by our athletic director, administration and coaches, steps have been taken to modify practices that include social distancing, regular disinfection and sanitizing of facilities, and the wearing of masks to mitigate the risk of transmission and spread of COVID-19. While the risk can’t be fully eliminated, I believe the steps taken will reduce the risk and allow students the opportunity to participate in athletics, band, and other extra-curricular activities.

These activities are a crucial component of our education program and are highly valued. Unless a direct order is given to the Greensburg Salem School District to cancel the fall sports season and delay winter sports until January, I am advocating to the Department of Education for our students and for the continuation of these programs through the fall season. We will continue to comply with guidelines set forth by the PIAA and the WPIAL for athletics. The Greensburg Salem School Board of Directors, Administration, Coaches, Faculty and Staff support our students and parents. We will continue with our practice schedules as set forth.
