Rep. Eric Nelson from Westmoreland County has voiced concerns following Governor Josh Shapiro's recent budget proposal. The governor presented a $51.47 billion budget during his address, which Rep. Nelson noted is significantly higher than previous budgets.

"Wow! Gov. Shapiro is proposing a record-high, $51.47 billion budget! For reference, that’s over $20 billion more than when I came to the House less than 10 years ago," said Rep. Nelson in response to the proposed budget increase.

While acknowledging some positive aspects of the proposal, such as programs for seniors and expansion of state police cadet classes, Rep. Nelson expressed worry about the potential financial implications for taxpayers. He stated, "If this became law tomorrow, the cost of government would double, while taxpayers continue to suffer the burden of higher groceries, utilities and gasoline."

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Nelson plans to thoroughly review each state agency's budget but warned that "spending to Gov. Shapiro’s proposed level will deplete our savings and our Rainy Day fund and sets our citizens up for a major tax increase in two years."

The proposed budget will undergo further examination by lawmakers as they assess its impact on Pennsylvania's financial health.
