The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is set to unveil a new exhibition featuring industrial landscape paintings by Aaron Harry Gorson. The collection will be accompanied by commentary from Maxwell King, who also selected the featured works and helped arrange them.
Maxwell King expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "It was such a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to work with The Westmoreland on this exhibition of the work of Aaron Gorson, and to appreciate—as Gorson did—Pittsburgh’s great steel-industry legacy." King plans to deliver a lecture on October 23 about Gorson's life and art. Registration for this event will open on the museum's website in mid-May.
Silvia Filippini-Fantoni, PhD, Director/CEO of The Westmoreland Museum, shared her excitement about the exhibition: "We are delighted to present this exhibition showcasing Gorson’s works from private collections, as well as one from our own collection, and to pay tribute to the strong steelmaking history of our region."
Aaron Harry Gorson (1872–1933) was an artist known for capturing Pittsburgh's industrial transformation. His works often depict nighttime scenes of steel mills along riversides. Originally trained as a portrait artist in Philadelphia, he became renowned for his industrial-themed art.
Maxwell King is a former editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer and president of the Heinz Endowments. He has authored several books including a biography on Fred Rogers titled "The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers." Support for this exhibition comes from Sebastian Mueller Charitable Fund of the Eden Hall Foundation. The artworks are loaned by various organizations including the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Duquesne Club.
The Westmoreland Museum is Western Pennsylvania's only institution dedicated solely to American art. It offers diverse cultural experiences through its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Admission is free with operating hours from 10 am to 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday.
