WESTMORELAND COUNTY: Westmoreland Cleanways Temporarily Suspends Electronics Collection Effective June 29, 2020

Recycle

Westmoreland County issued the following announcement on June 26.

(Latrobe, PA) Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center must immediately but TEMPORARILY halt the collection of electronics (TVs of all types; computer monitors; computers and peripherals; all other electronics and small appliances)

The organization was informed that one of the processors where their material is shipped shut down due to a suspected COVID-19 infection. This suspected positive COVID case did not occur locally. The Recycling Center has been operating under all recommended precautions and CDC guidelines since re-opening on May 11. However, the shutdown in the downstream supply chain impacts their ability to ship material to its proper destination for recycling. It is anticipated that the disruption will last no more than three weeks, and that electronics collection will resume in mid-July.

Executive Director Ellen Keefe wants to make clear that the Recycling Center remains open during regularly scheduled hours (Mondays Noon-5 p.m.; Wednesdays and Fridays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at 355 Pleasant Unity Mutual Road, Greensburg 15601 to accept all other recyclable materials:

  • Glass containers (clear, green, brown)
  • Scrap metal
  • Freon appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezers)
  • Cardboard, newspaper, white office paper, mixed paper
  • Tires
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
There are no residency requirements and no limit on the amount of material that can be brought to the center. She recommends that people visit www.westmorelandcleanways.org for the address, operating hours, and other recyclables accepted in addition to electronics.

Keefe asks for the public’s patience and understanding as they navigate the uncertainty along with everyone else. Westmoreland Cleanways’ mission is to serve the community and to encourage recycling as much as can possibly be properly recycled.
