Recent conversations on government waste and fraud have spotlighted the efforts undertaken by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established by former President Donald Trump. While the department targets federal mismanagement, state-level issues are also significant.

Attorney General Dave Sunday's Medicaid Fraud Team recently reported the recovery of over $11.3 million in misused Medicaid funds during fiscal year 2024. Pennsylvania ranked first nationally for the number of Medicaid fraud charges and third in convictions, reflecting significant progress in tackling the issue.

The Medicaid Fraud Team focuses on prosecuting individuals involved in unlawful billing, service non-provision, and the neglect or abuse of Pennsylvanians under their care. Financial exploitation of older adults is also prosecuted.

Notable cases include a Licensed Practical Nurse from Philadelphia County who pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud and theft by deception. She falsely reported around 2,000 hours of services, billing for care she could not have provided due to simultaneous out-of-state travel. Her restitution exceeds $96,000.

Additionally, a 63-year-old woman is charged with fraud, theft by deception, and record tampering after claiming Medicaid funds for services rendered to a deceased individual. She allegedly received more than $33,000 from AmeriHealth.

In Delaware County, a 24-year-old man pleaded no contest to Medicaid fraud, having submitted over 400 false hours of claimed care for a hospitalized patient. He was sentenced to prison, probation, and ordered to pay restitution.

These cases underscore the importance of maintaining Medicaid's integrity to support those in need. As Representative Jill Cooper stated, "Medicaid fraud is not a victimless crime. It takes away vital services from folks in need."

Additional community reminders were provided by Representative Cooper, including a grant workshop scheduled for April 16. This event aims to guide local governments and nonprofits through the complexities of grant applications. Attendees can RSVP by contacting the provided number.
