Dec. 11, 2023 - After 14 years of service in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, House Republican Caucus Chairman Rep. George Dunbar (R-Westmoreland) has announced that he will not seek re-election for an eighth term. In a statement, Dunbar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents of the 56th Legislative District, calling it the most rewarding experience of his professional life.

"For the last 13 years, constituents have trusted me as their voice in Harrisburg, and it was a responsibility I took with utmost care," said Dunbar. As a Certified Public Accountant, Dunbar has been dedicated to improving the Commonwealth's business climate and creating more job opportunities through tax reform and right-sizing government. He has worked to ensure that local governments and school districts do not double tax businesses and has taken steps to eliminate fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars.

Dunbar acknowledged that not every piece of legislation makes headlines or single-handedly changes the trajectory of Pennsylvania. He emphasized the importance of making smaller improvements in areas such as economic development, which collectively allow businesses, both small and large, to thrive and contribute to the growth of the state.

One of Dunbar's notable accomplishments includes his role in architecting legislation that allows Pennsylvania casinos to establish satellite venues in neighboring counties. This initiative has resulted in significant funding awards for municipal projects in Westmoreland County, including stormwater upgrades, bridge reconstructions, and improvements to police and fire equipment, playgrounds, and parks, totaling over $20 million.

Dunbar's leadership and reputation as a pragmatic and thoughtful legislator have been recognized by his peers. In 2021, he was elected to serve as Republican Caucus chairman, filling a vacancy left by the passing of his close friend and fellow lawmaker, Rep. Mike Reese. He was re-elected to the same position for the 2023-24 Legislative Session.

Throughout his tenure, Dunbar's work has received praise from various stakeholder groups and local organizations, including the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf, Meadows Standardbred Owners Association, Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, and the National Federation of Independent Business.

In his announcement, Dunbar expressed his gratitude to his wife and children for their support, acknowledging that his role as a legislator often required his attention to be diverted to Harrisburg. He also thanked every resident in his district, recognizing that serving in this capacity has been one of the highest honors he has experienced.

As Rep. George Dunbar concludes his legislative career, his dedication to improving Pennsylvania's business climate and his commitment to serving his constituents will be remembered. His contributions have left a lasting impact, and his leadership will be missed in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
