LIGONIER TOWNSHIP – Rep. Leslie Rossi (R-Westmoreland) will lead a bridge dedication ceremony in Ligonier Township to honor the heroic acts of two Medal of Honor recipients, Sgt. Alvin P. Carey and Pvt. John C. Ewing. The ceremony is set to take place on Saturday, May 11, at 11 a.m. at the Ligonier Valley Cemetery Chapel.
Rossi expressed her gratitude, stating, "We are paying tribute to the enduring spirit of two remarkable men from Westmoreland County who have served our nation with valor and distinction. I am grateful to everyone who made this deserving dedication possible."
Sgt. Alvin P. Carey, who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941, and Pvt. John C. Ewing, who volunteered for service in 1864, both displayed exceptional bravery in their respective battles, leading to the award of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The master of ceremonies, Mark Sorice, founder of the Ligonier Medal of Honor Project, quoted President John F. Kennedy, emphasizing the importance of living by words of gratitude, stating, "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them."
The dedication ceremony will include remarks from various individuals, such as Rachel Duda from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, members of the Carey and Ewing families, and Lt. Col. Craig Minnick, founder of the Staff Sgt. Alvin P. Carey and Pvt. John C. Ewing Medal of Honor Scholarship.
This event serves as a tribute not only to Carey and Ewing but also to all Medal of Honor recipients, with a total of 3,536 medals awarded to date, including 380 credited to Pennsylvania.
