Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward expressed her views regarding President Biden's decision to prevent Nippon from acquiring U.S. Steel. She linked the decision to political influences, pointing out the International Steelworkers Union's endorsement of the Democratic presidential ticket.
"President Joe Biden’s decision to block Nippon’s acquisition of U.S. Steel is no surprise," Ward stated. She criticized federal agencies for coordinating with unions and advocacy groups, suggesting these actions were aimed at obstructing the acquisition.
Ward also drew parallels between environmental groups' opposition to the deal and past delays in permitting for U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley facility by local environmental departments. She highlighted that such delays led U.S. Steel to invest $1.5 billion in a new plant in Arkansas instead of Pennsylvania.
She directed criticism towards Governor Josh Shapiro, accusing him of lacking leadership on this issue and failing to provide solutions despite having resources for economic development. "Shapiro has been silent on the acquisition," she noted, expressing concern over job security for Pennsylvania workers.
Ward emphasized that substantial investment is necessary for U.S. Steel's operations in southwestern Pennsylvania and described Nippon’s offer as currently viable. She commended the local Steelworkers union for their efforts in negotiating with Nippon.
"I am hoping President Trump will consider taking a second look at the local union negotiated concessions," she said, urging action to secure jobs in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Ward concluded by asserting her readiness, along with her Senate Republican colleagues, to collaborate with the Trump Administration to support Pennsylvania's steel industry and heritage.
