Local Share Account grants from the Commonwealth Finance Authority are set to aid fire departments in acquiring essential communication and other equipment, as announced by Rep. Eric Davanzo of Westmoreland. The funds, sourced from casino revenue, will primarily benefit volunteer fire departments.
Davanzo stated, "Local Share Account funds are the result of casino revenue and many of these dollars are going to volunteer fire departments. I can think of no better way to invest these dollars than to assist those who are sacrificing their own safety for their neighbors."
Among the beneficiaries, Rostraver Central Volunteer Fire Department will receive $25,000 for new portable radios that enable firefighters to use a regional radio system and connect with surrounding counties. The North Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department is allocated $7,000 for hoses and nozzles. Meanwhile, Scottdale Fire Department is granted $32,140 for new self-contained breathing apparatus harness packs.
These grants aim to support economic development, job training, community improvement, and public interest projects through gaming funds managed by the CFA—an independent agency within the Department of Community and Economic Development.
Additional grant allocations include:
- North Belle Vernon Borough: $41,460 for sidewalk replacement around key municipal buildings.
- Rostraver Township: $21,695 for two utility vehicles for police and road department use.
- Scottdale Borough: $67,774 for a new municipal work truck.
- South Huntingdon Township: $30,636 for handrail replacements at a municipal building.
- North Huntingdon Township: $70,000 for a tractor and boom mower in collaboration with Rep. George Dunbar.
Davanzo expressed gratitude towards legislative colleagues stating that "It was a big help to have support from our friends in Senate as well," highlighting contributions from Sens. Kim Ward and Pat Stefano which were instrumental in securing these grants.
