WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) released the following statement after the House passed legislation supporting law enforcement officers during National Police Week:
“Democrats’ defund the police movement and soft-on-crime policies demoralize law enforcement and embolden criminals. As a result, violent crime in Democrat-run cities is at a record high, and police officers are being attacked and killed in the line of duty at unprecedented rates.
Congress has a responsibility to provide our law enforcement with the support and resources they need to do their jobs and keep our communities safe – and I am committed to ensuring we continue to fulfill that duty. I am proud to support these bills during National Police Week to recognize the brave men and women in blue.”
The following pieces of legislation were passed by the U.S. House of Representatives:
- H.R. 2494 – the POLICE Act: This bill makes assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense.
- H.R. 3091 – the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act: This bill directs the General Services Administration to establish a program under which a federal law enforcement officer may purchase a retired handgun from the agency that issued the handgun to the officer.
- H.Con.Res.40: This resolution supports law enforcement and condemns defunding or abolishing the police.
