Senator Kim Ward (R-39) and Rep. Leslie Rossi (R-59) have announced a significant grant of $300,000 for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The grant has been awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority's Watershed Restoration Protection program. This funding will be used to address a sinkhole along Route 30 in Unity Twp., Westmoreland County.

Sen. Kim Ward emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of communities as they continue to grow in Westmoreland County. She stated, "As our Westmoreland County communities continue to grow, it is important that we put the appropriate safety measures in place to complement the progress we are making in southwestern Pennsylvania. This grant will help modernize our drainage system to ensure no further damage to the residents and community in Unity Twp."

The sinkhole along Route 30 was caused by a collapsed underground culvert that was connected to an unidentified stream, which in turn connected to the Loyalhanna creek. To rectify the sinkhole, the project will involve the construction of a culvert, connecting it to a nearby culvert with an access shaft, and filling in the sink. Rep. Leslie Rossi stressed the need for stabilizing measures to prevent any further collapse. She stated, "Ignoring the problem can cause serious injury. Sinkholes can also cause damage to roads, buildings, and houses. Drainage maintenance, expansion, and innovation can create jobs, and the investment will save money over time."

The funding for this project was made possible through the Watershed Restoration Protection funds, which are generated by Act 13, the natural gas impact fee. This grant will contribute to the preservation and restoration of the environment in Western Pennsylvania.

This grant announcement is a positive development for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the residents of Unity Twp. The investment in the drainage system will help safeguard the community and support sustainable growth in the region.
