Rep. Cooper argues that more laws may not necessarily be the solution to the issue of distracted driving, stating, "The need to make our roads safer does not stop at banning the use of cellular phones."

Cooper emphasizes that the focus should be on addressing driver distraction as a whole, rather than singling out cellphone usage. She points out the potential unintended consequences of a sweeping ban on handheld cellphones, stating, "Banning handheld cellphone usage encroaches upon personal rights and individual freedoms."

Regarding the data collection aspect of the bill, Cooper raises concerns about the collection of driver information such as race, ethnicity, gender, and age at traffic stops. She notes, "If that is the intent of this kind of data collection, we need to consider it separately from the topic of cellular phone usage while driving."

While Senate Bill 37 passed in the House, with Cooper voting against it, she highlights that the bill will now go back to the Senate for reconsideration due to the amendments related to data collection before reaching the governor's desk.

In addition to her stance on the cellphone usage bill, Cooper also shared some other news topics and reminders with the public. She announced a Free Mobile Shredding Event scheduled for May 23 at her office, where residents can safely dispose of sensitive documents.
