Efforts are underway in Pennsylvania to address the ongoing crisis in emergency medical services (EMS) that has seen multiple ambulance companies shutter due to financial difficulties. Saltsburg-based Lifestat recently closed after 36 years, and Jeannette experienced a similar fate months before. This issue reflects a broader problem across the state, as 47 ambulance companies closed in 2023-24.

State mandates require local governments to designate ambulance providers, but these closures have led to increased pressure on neighboring services that are similarly struggling financially. "This problem will not go away on its own," said Representative Jill Cooper, who introduced House Bill 1152 to support EMS agencies. The bill proposes that insurers cover 350% of the ambulance rate set by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services for state-mandated 911 calls. It also aims to eliminate "balance billing" practices.

Cooper noted that EMS funding is often misunderstood: few local governments contribute financially, and insurance companies seldom cover full costs. She expressed her commitment to further legislative measures as co-chair of the bipartisan House Fire and EMS Caucus.

In other news, Pennsylvania’s Department of Revenue extended its call center hours to assist late-season tax filers. The extended hours run through April 15, with help available both by phone and online.

Additionally, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will accept applications for heating bill assistance until April 18. The program supports individuals and families with heating costs and provides emergency aid. Eligible residents can apply online or through Westmoreland County’s Assistance Office.
