The Pennsylvania Senate began its 2025-26 legislative session today with the swearing-in of both new and re-elected members. This session also saw the formal re-election of Sen. Kim Ward as senate president pro tempore, along with a vote on rules to govern the Senate for the next two years.

Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward emphasized accountability and effective legislation, stating, “As we kick-off the new two-year legislative session, the Senate Republican Caucus will continue to remain accountable to the people of Pennsylvania by ensuring good, effective, and fiscally responsible legislation is passed.” She outlined priorities such as reducing bureaucratic hurdles, expanding energy resources, assisting vulnerable populations through healthcare support, and reforming education.

Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman expressed enthusiasm about the new session: “Today is an exciting day as new and re-elected members of our Senate Majority Caucus are sworn-in to office to represent constituents across our commonwealth.” He noted that with Senator Langerholc joining the leadership team, they are prepared to advance policies aimed at strengthening communities and creating sustainable jobs.

Senate Majority Whip Wayne Langerholc, Jr. acknowledged his new role: “I appreciate the confidence placed in me by my peers to assume this leadership position and will use it to help further guide the caucus during this legislative session.” He highlighted opportunities for economic growth and energy leadership.

Senate Appropriations Chair Scott Martin spoke on future challenges: “I am proud of all we have accomplished, but we still face significant challenges in the years ahead.” He stressed the need for a sustainable state budget and policies that could reverse economic decline while promoting educational opportunities.

The November 2024 General Election resulted in a 28-22 majority for Senate Republicans. Further announcements regarding committee chairs and assignments are expected soon.
