Patty Kennedy-Zafred, a resident of Murrysville, has once again been recognized for her artistic talents. She recently secured the second-place craft title at the 2024 State Museum of Pennsylvania's Art of the State exhibition for her work "American Portraits: Deep Roots." This quilt features silk-screened photos and headshots of America's diverse field workers.

Kennedy-Zafred is no stranger to accolades at this exhibition. In 2022, she claimed first place in the same category, and in 2016, her piece "Boys of the Mines" was added to the museum's permanent collection through its Purchase Award.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania, operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission since its establishment in 1905, hosts this annual juried exhibition in partnership with the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation. Located next to Harrisburg's capitol building, it offers both permanent and changing exhibits.

Kennedy-Zafred explained that her work merges photography and quilting through a photo emulsion process similar to developing film photos. Her quilts are often screen printed on hand-dyed cloth or old feed bags for a vintage appearance.

Her award-winning piece will remain on display at the State Museum until January 5, 2025. Afterward, it will move to Shippensburg University's Kauffman Gallery from January 29 to February 27, 2025.

Rep. Jill Cooper recently visited Kennedy-Zafred at her office to discuss "American Portraits: Liberation in the Land," another piece utilizing large vintage photo prints through the same emulsion process.

In related news, Rep. Cooper reminded residents about several programs. The deadline for Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is December 31, with increased income limits making more residents eligible. Assistance is available through Rep. Cooper’s offices free of charge.

Additionally, fishing licenses for the 2025 season are now available from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Prices remain unchanged from previous years.

For further information on these topics or Patty Kennedy-Zafred's work, residents can visit relevant websites or contact appropriate offices directly.
