The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is set to host an exhibition titled "Our Own Work, Our Own Way," featuring over 40 women artists connected to the American South. The exhibition draws from The Johnson Collection and includes works by notable artists such as Anni Albers, Elaine de Kooning, Alma Thomas, and Ida Kohlmeyer. It spans from the 1940s to the 2000s.
Sarah F. Tignor, Director of The Johnson Collection, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with The Westmoreland for this exhibition: “We are thrilled to partner with The Westmoreland in presenting Our Own Work, Our Own Way as we travel this exhibition to a venue outside the South for the first time,” she said. “It is wonderful to utilize our collection to shine a light on these groundbreaking women artists.”
The exhibition highlights how these artists transcended their era's boundaries by challenging traditional gender roles and breaking artistic conventions. Despite facing challenges in a region slow to embrace gender equality, they contributed significantly to modernism and influenced the South’s artistic landscape.
This presentation is part of The Westmoreland's Year of Women Artists initiative in 2025, aiming to address gender imbalance in art representation. Women currently make up only 13% of major American museum collections. This yearlong celebration will include various exhibitions and events focusing on American women artists from diverse backgrounds and periods.
Upcoming exhibitions include "A Fountain of Forms: The Rise of the American Woman Sculptor, 1910–1929," showcasing bronzes by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, Malvina Hoffman, and Janet Scudder; "Pennsylvania in Progress," featuring photography by Aaronel deRoy Gruber; "Cecilia Beaux: Inventing the Modern Portrait"; "The Art of Elizabeth Catlett from the Samella Lewis Collection"; and Brynn Hurlstone’s large-scale installation "Resonance."
Support for these programs comes from several foundations including Hillman Foundation and The Heinz Endowments. Additional support is provided by Sebastian Mueller Charitable Fund of the Eden Hall Foundation and Art Bridges.
The Westmoreland Museum offers free general admission and operates Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
